finally done with history!!

I am finally done! I spent the last week gathering census information at the campus library. Thanks to Cory he gave me the 8 census tract numbers and I was able to find the data I needed. I had to add up all the tract numbers to get an accurate population rate, ancestry, etc. It took so much longer then I thought it would. Thank God for computers and that everything is on the computer for 2000 and beyond!!
I have been under an enormous amount of stress like everyone else is. I was sick Sunday and got behind on my work. This class is very different than anything I have ever taken. I am used to being able to manage my time and priorities but this semester has been a challenge but a great learning experience.

I think that we are so close and can get everything together before the event. We can do it guys!!! I think things are going to go really well. I have learned a lot the last couple of days about the community and I am starting to really get excited that we are going to continue the research after this semester.

April 23

I went with Dr. Orser to the library yesterday. He showed me how to look up all of the census information for the missing years that we need. Also, he told me about a map that is at Pratt Library that would be helpful to our project. I should get to Umbc's library tomorrow and then hopefully Pratt sometime this week. It might be really difficult for me to get to Pratt though. I am bogged down with work, as everyone is. I have had to put the club on pause until tomorrow. Hopefully I will get some more good information. I have been trying to think of more ideas.

Street Team

Wow, I am tired!! Today was an experience!! At first Staci dropped Natalie, Alex and myself off and we started going house to house. I was so nervous at first because I did not want to bother people or feel as if we were intruding. After the first street I started to feel a little bit more at ease. We did get positive responses from people about wanting to preserving the neighborhood, the 4100 club and the impact that it has had on the community. There were a few older people in their sixties and seventies we talked with who are going to check with their children who were very involved with the club at one point. They were going to contact Professor King to order tickets. A man even donated $10 to us. That was super nice, and we were not expecting that.

At first I did not want to be there though. We were walking, and some lady yelled look at those "b***hes, their f***ing retards.....how nice. I told Natalie and Alex to keep on walking!!! Maybe next time I would feel comfortable if one of the guys went with us.

We got a few pictures and two of them are of people of the community who let us take pictures of them. Overall the experience was good. There is still a lot of work that needs to be done for this event as far as promoting in the neighborhood. I think next time we need to get a lot more fliers and go crazy with them. We also need a number to contact Professor King. We hand wrote her number on the fliers we gave out because many people were interested and wanted the $10 price, but they did not have money or wanted to talk to their family.

I had never been to the club before today and I was very impressed. I loved the back room and think there is a lot we can do with the room. I loved how the bar/dining area is covered with memorabilia that I took pictures.

some thoughts

I am still working on the summary for the community of Brooklyn. I have found that it is hard to piece together information you don't have. The editing process is coming along well though. I have started a myspace page for the 4100 club event plus I will give it to them to use after the event for their own promotion. I also bought a scrapbook this past weekend that will be displayed at the event. I will put any documents needed from history in there along with photo's. This will be for the club as well. It was only 6.99 so there is no need to reimburse me. I think that maybe we can do a lot for the actual event between having Bingo and other activities. We really have to plan this out to its not too chaotic with everything going on. Should we set in stone the time for the buffet? I think we should have it from 1-3 and people should know this before buying the ticket so they don't think that if they come at 6 they will get a hot meal. I also like the idea of a cake walk. I will think of some other ideas before next Tuesday.

venting

I have been thinking a lot about what ways we can get people to truly want to come to this event in the community. It seems that we are speaking with people who do not want to support this because of the club. I think that we NEED to emphasize to them it is not about who the owners are now and even about supporting them, but it is a positive way to get the community involved in past memories and experiences that have shaped their community. I don't want to force people to go when they don't like the owners so maybe if we phrased it in a way so the people know and feel comfortable that its truly about their community and not the owners. I don't want to put the owners down but I feel that in order to get to the community we need to reach out the them and see what they want out of this, and what it would take for them to come.
