Timeline of Brooklyn, Curtis Bay and Brooklyn Park
1700’s:
1729: Baltimore City begins with 60 lots.
1800’s:
1853: April 26th The Patapsco Company started to deal with real estate in northern Anne Arundel County. This started the beginning stages of developing Brooklyn.
1856: Light Street Bridge is built. Toll is put in place by its private owners.
1866: Slow growth in these areas
1868/69: Brooklyn Methodist Church is established.
1878: The Light Street Bridge is bought from private owners by Baltimore City. It is rebuilt and made free to cross. This bridge allowed farmers to sell their produce at markets in the city. The population started to increase which also helped the increase of businesses.
1882: The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad built Curtis Bay station; this allows more connection between the communities and the city. The old Patapsco company lands are bought from the South Baltimore Harbor and Improving Company.
1887: The Crisp Memorial Presbyterian Church established.
1890: The residents of these towns are in industrious work for the railroads and factories during this decade. The Curtis Bay Methodist Church is established.
1892: The electric car is completed by the South Baltimore Harbor and Improving Company for the B& O Railroads. A station was built in Brooklyn.
1900’s:
1900-1918: A vinegar factory and the world’s largest alcohol factory is created in Curtis Bay. This brings a $5 million enterprise. A machine shop business called Davidson Chemical is created and built
1904: Streets started to become paved and trees are planted. The communities looked more like an industrial suburban rather than farmland.
1906: There are 25,000 residents between Brooklyn, Curtis Bay and Wagner’s Point (this is a close town by them).
1907: The Brown Memorial Presbyterian Church became the first organization in charge of recreations in the area.
1914: Water pipes are laid.
1916: St. John’s evangelical Lutheran church established.
1917: The completion of Hanover Bridge provides more residents, businesses and organizations are present.
1818: March 29: The Act of Annexation is passed allowing Brooklyn and Curtis Bay part of Baltimore City.
1919-1934: January 1 1919: The formal annexation took place- the city starts to expand its boundaries; 1919-1934: the Gas distribution of the city is improved because gas mains are put in across the Patapsco to Brooklyn and Curtis Bay.
1935: Clare Barton Lodge established;
1939: Girl Scouts becomes available
1946: Brooklyn Lions Club is established
1950: Residents start purchasing household items in department stores

Rough Draft 1 of Summary
Here is what I have been working on. I have missing gaps in the history and have been getting a little frustrated trying to piece together the missing info. I have all the citation info if anyone needs it, for some reason it is not showing up in the context of the blog.
Summary of History
The neighboring communities of Brooklyn, Curtis Bay and Brooklyn Park in Maryland are closely linked together but are separated by county lines. Brooklyn and Curtis Bay are located at southernmost tip of Baltimore City. Brooklyn Park is located in Anne Arundel County. They have been closely connected through out their history having been once all part of Anne Arundel County until March 29, 1918 when legislature was passed on the Act of Annexation. This is done because there was much pressure on Baltimore to increase its size in competition to other states and cities. The Act of Annexation legally put Brooklyn and Curtis Bay part of Baltimore City. This is signed and backed up by Governor Emerson C. Harrington. Even though Brooklyn Park is located in Anne Arundel County it has always had a sense of place in Baltimore City.
These towns consisted of farmland and piers that ran right up to the Patapsco River in its earliest years. By 1853 the Patapsco Land Company formed Brooklyn and its surrounding areas. A generous amount of land was sold for $100.00 and many started to migrate to these areas. Many of the people were European and came to America looking for work and money. The very first settlers are Germans who resided in the Brooklyn section. In Curtis Bay people from Poland, Bohemia and Czechoslovakia resided here. Many of the younger generations tried to break away from their customs and traditions. In Curtis Bay there were many facilities built to help honor the different customs and traditions such as the “Russian hall, Polish Hall, Czechoslovakian hall, and the Polish Democratic club” . Churches for the Roman Catholics, Lutherans and Methodists become established early on. Polish weddings became a custom and a happy time for congregation usually lasting two days. The polish loved to party in cellars while drinking from kegs of beer and dancing to an accordion playing folk dance music. The diversity in these communities produced tensions between the different groups.

This bridge helps tremendously to the development as it allowed farmers to sell their produce in city markets. A toll was in place at this bridge charging “5 cents to walk across, twenty five cents for a one horse team and fifty cents for a two horse team” . This is made free in 1878. The Baltimore Car Wheel Company was the first business to run out of Curtis Bay and much of its workers lived in Brooklyn. There is a Curtis Bay station of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad that is built in 1882. The completion of the electric car line occurs in 1892. A sugar refinery opened employing 1,000 people until burning down in 1896. Forty homes are established in 1866 and by 1906 “more than 25,000 people” are located in these areas. During the early 20th century these communities have “grown into important residential and industries centers” that many chose to call home. Many believed during WWI that many would leave these communities but the population increased. By WWII more even development in the communities which continues to increase the population.

spring break is over :(
I am going to copy and paste each section of the community that I am working on. I hope that this first post helps clarify the issue of Brooklyn/Brooklyn Park. I have found a lot of good information on Brooklyn/Brooklyn Park over break. I am spending tonight sifting through everything and writing it up. When I am finished, please please feel free to help change my writings. Things are coming along. I have obtained the census information on both Brooklyn and Brooklyn Park. I have done some research on the organizations in the area and its history that is attainable online. I will be "for real" going to Enoch Library and Brooklyn library over spring break to obtain the remaining history. I am really excited about this.
I have also talked to a friend of mine about possibly being the DJ for free. I gave him information and he will be getting back to me in the next week. I also have a friend who is a producer at Fox 45 and going to see if she could help. I will speak with her and e-mail you back once she lets me know if we can go further.

I am really excited to start working on the research. I am going to the Enoch Library tomorrow, so hopefully it will be a good visit! I want to get most of the research done real soon because I know everyone else wants to know more about 4100 club and the community. I'll write tomorrow when I get more information tomorrow.
